Who is a Deacon?
A Deacon is an ordained male servant-leader in Christ’s church, called to oversee and coordinate ministries of mercy, service, and stewardship.
He serves under the authority of the elders and alongside the pastor as a model of Christlike compassion, meeting the physical and practical needs of the congregation while promoting unity, generosity, and care within the body of Christ.

What does a Deacon do?
The Deacon carries out the ministry of mercy and service so that the Word of God may flourish and the needs of the people are met:

1. Know the Needs – Become aware of the material, emotional, and practical burdens within the congregation.
2. Meet the Needs – Administer mercy ministries: assist the poor, care for the sick, support the distressed, and steward church resources faithfully.
3. Lead by Serving – Mobilize others in acts of compassion, generosity, and service; model humble, joyful ministry.
4. Protect Unity – Address needs impartially, promote reconciliation, and guard against neglect or favoritism within the church.

The Deacon ensures that no one in the congregation suffers need without compassionate attention and that all mercy work reflects the love of Christ.

Why do they do it?

• Because Scripture commands the church to “serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13) and to care for the poor and needy (Acts 6:1–7).
• Because God has appointed deacons to relieve the elders of practical burdens so they can devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.
• Because mercy ministry demonstrates the gospel—showing the compassion of Christ and strengthening the unity of His body.
• Because acts of service glorify God, edify the church, and bear witness to the world of Christ’s kingdom love.

How do they do it?
Deacons serve through organized, accountable, and compassionate care:

• Organize systems for mercy and stewardship—benevolence funds, meal trains, visitation, and practical assistance.
• Work closely with elders and lay shepherds to identify and address needs in the congregation.
• Train and mobilize volunteers to participate in mercy ministry and practical service.
• Maintain accountability through transparent communication, accurate record-keeping, and faithful stewardship of church resources.
• Set goals for care—timely responses to needs, fair distribution of resources, and consistent follow-up with those helped.
• Pray regularly for wisdom, generosity, and compassion, depending on the Holy Spirit to sustain humble service.
• Model servant leadership, reflecting Christ, who “came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
